Laser Tag Sound Track

Laser Tag Sound Track is an event taking place at a functioning laser tag facility called Ultrazone, in Alhambra, Los Angeles, CA. The idea was to compose experimental soundtracks moving away from the usual driving, chunky mix of epic music and sound effects that we can find in blockbuster war films. The intent was to propose 8-15 minute original works aiming to explore the "collective human response to the grey areas between recreation, entertainment, emotional suggestivity, and conflict".

My composition is called Dark Room. The idea was to give the song a kind of dark feel and a heady atmosphere, in order to emphasize the stressful and suspenseful atmosphere of the laser game. Quiet moments with threatening drone sounds appearing now and then alternate with more epic organ and guitar episodes. In this regard, the urban blues style appeared to be an appropriate form to create contrasting cinematic atmospheres.

Though not selected to be played in the laser tag facility during the event, my contribution was featured together with a dozen of other artists on the Kchung Radio preliminary broadcast for Laser Tag Sound Track on February 17 at midnight PST. Founded by a loose collection of CalArts grads in 2011, KCHUNG Radio mixes talk, experimental performance and music in an anarchic format (no rigorous schedules, no rules). The radio broadcasts locally in Chinatown and also streams online.
